My Healing Philosophy

Understanding the unitive approach that guides everything we do
Healing Philosophy

About My Work

I am a Clinical Master Herbalist and Certified Nutritionist who has dedicated more than thirty years to developing and practicing a pioneering model in wholistic, integrative medicine. Through my work at the Mederi Center in Ashland, Oregon, and my clinical practice known as Mederi Care, I have helped thousands of patients facing cancer, chronic illnesses, and age-related conditions achieve better outcomes and enhanced quality of life.

The Unitive Approach

At the heart of my work is the concept of “unitive medicine.” The term “unitive” means “characterized by or tending to produce union,” and this captures the fundamental purpose of my approach: to unify and heal the fragmentation between conventional science, genetics, and immunology with the life-enhancing properties of botanical medicine, nutrition, diet, and lifestyle.
Rather than treating these modalities as separate or competing approaches, unitive medicine brings them together into a coherent whole. This approach prioritizes maximizing innate healing in a wholistic manner—what I describe as “uni-healing“—while still incorporating pathogenic treatment when necessary.
The result is a comprehensive framework for developing novel therapeutic strategies that incorporate the best of traditional, wholistic, and conventional medicines, all supported by rigorous modern science.
Healing Philosophy

A Synthesis of Ancient Wisdom and Modern Science

Through this unitive, integrative approach, I combine modern scientific research and evidence-based medicine with dietary, botanical, nutritional, and lifestyle interventions. As both a disciplined researcher and a compassionate clinician, I have built a practice that delivers consistently better outcomes for patients while honoring the whole person—body, mind, and spirit.

The Three Diagnostic Lenses

The foundation of Mederi Care is examining every case through three interconnected perspectives:

Lens 1: The Host (Terrain Assessment)

Understanding who the person is—their constitutional baseline, genetic predispositions, vitality levels, stress response, psychological factors, lifestyle, and environment. This lens reveals the patient's foundational resilience and guides how aggressively we can intervene therapeutically.

Lens 2: The Microenvironment (Laboratory Intelligence)

Examining what's actually happening in the internal ecosystem through comprehensive laboratory testing—inflammatory patterns, immune function, metabolic status, microbiome health, hormonal balance, nutritional deficiencies, and toxic burden. This lens provides objective data about the biochemical reality beneath the symptoms.

Lens 3: Disease Characteristics (Know Your Enemy)

Understanding the specific behavior and strategy of the disease itself—genetic mutations, growth factors, signaling pathways, disease aggressiveness, and treatment resistance patterns. Not all cancers behave the same. Not all autoimmune conditions have identical drivers. This lens ensures therapeutic precision.

Why Unitive Medicine?

Chronic Disease is Increasing

Our society is experiencing a sharp increase in complex, chronic diseases—cancer, autoimmune disorders, neurological conditions, metabolic dysfunction. These conditions develop gradually over time due to imbalance throughout the entire biological system, yet conventional medicine lacks the proper methodology for preventing and treating them effectively.

Fragmented Care Doesn't Work

Most integrative medicine simply stacks modalities without a unifying framework. Patients end up with 30+ supplements, conflicting advice from different practitioners, and marginal improvements instead of real healing. Addition is not integration—there’s no coherent therapeutic strategy guiding treatment.

The Gap Between Research and Practice

There is a disconnect between evolving research and how practitioners apply it clinically. The gap between emerging science and integration into medical practice can be as long as 50 years, particularly in complex chronic illness. Practitioners need systematic frameworks to translate knowledge into effective clinical care.

Beyond Protocols to Personalized Medicine

Cookie-cutter protocols ignore individual genetic makeup, environmental exposures, constitutional differences, and the unique factors driving each person’s illness. Real healing requires seeing the whole picture—not just labs, not just symptoms, but the complete pattern of dysfunction across all three diagnostic lenses.

Our Philosophy

At the heart of Mederi Care is the understanding that chronic disease develops gradually over time due to imbalance throughout the entire biological system. Restoration of health requires identifying and improving the specific dysfunctions that have contributed to the disease state.

The Medical Detective Approach

We approach each patient like a medical detective, gathering information through our three-lens assessment to understand where they fall on the continuum between wellness and illness. We’re solving the complex puzzle of each person’s life to appropriately diagnose the underlying causes of their symptoms.

Love-Centered Medicine

Conventional medicine often operates from fear—patients terrified by diagnoses, practitioners afraid of liability. Mederi Care operates from love, which means pursuing truth above all else, exercising full clinical capacity, trusting intuition alongside data, and empowering patients rather than making them dependent.

Building the Roots, Not Painting the Leaves

Think of the patient as a tree. Most medicine treats the leaves (symptoms). Mederi Care builds the roots (constitutional vitality, life force, fundamental resilience). When the root system is strong, the whole tree thrives. This takes time, but creates lasting health rather than temporary symptom suppression.

How It Works

01

Comprehensive Assessment

Schedule a call with our education director to discuss your current practice and challenges, your professional development goals, which training pathway serves you best, and whether our community is the right fit.

02

Pattern Recognition

By examining all three lenses simultaneously, we identify patterns and connections that might be overlooked when viewing through only one perspective. This reveals the root causes driving your symptoms.

03

Prioritization

Not everything needs to be addressed at once. The three-lens assessment shows us what to tackle first: fortify the terrain, modulate the microenvironment, then address the disease itself.

04

Synergistic Treatment Strategy

We select specific interventions from six therapeutic toolboxes, creating a coherent plan where everything works together. You’re not getting 30 random supplements—you’re getting 6-8 carefully chosen interventions with clear rationale.

05

Implementation & Support

Your personalized protocol addresses the whole person—botanical medicine, nutritional support, dietary changes, lifestyle optimization, spiritual care, and when necessary, pharmaceutical integration.

06

Ongoing Refinement

We monitor your progress and adjust the plan as your body heals. As the terrain strengthens, treatment strategies evolve. This is medicine that adapts to your changing needs.

The Six Therapeutic Toolboxes

Once we’ve assessed through all three lenses, we select interventions from six integrated therapeutic domains:

Botanical Medicine

Whole-plant medicines with multi-targeted, synergistic actions. We use the full intelligence of the plant—not isolated compounds—honoring thousands of years of plant-human co-evolution.

Nutritional Medicine

Therapeutic supplementation guided by laboratory data to correct deficiencies, modulate inflammatory pathways, support mitochondrial function, and address specific physiological needs revealed in your assessment.

Dietary Medicine (Food as Medicine)

Strategic dietary interventions tailored to your unique needs and therapeutic goals. Food is information, not just calories. Your eating plan is designed to support healing at the cellular level.

Lifestyle & Movement Medicine

Sleep optimization, stress management, exercise prescription, circadian rhythm restoration, and relationship support. These aren’t “nice to haves”—they’re primary interventions essential for healing.

Spiritual Care

Addressing fear, cultivating meaning, supporting emotional processing, and creating space for the healing power of love and connection. This is where healing becomes transformational, not just transactional.

Pharmaceutical Integration

When conventional treatments are necessary—chemotherapy, surgery, pharmaceuticals—we use them strategically within the larger healing context, always minimizing harm while supporting your body’s resilience.
